Doug and Dick DeVos, brothers from Grand Rapids, Mich., couldn’t have asked for a better Father’s Day gift than getting to sail with their sons, Dalton (22) and Ryan (age 23), respectively, on separate boats and against each other in the Melges 32 class.
The 86-foot yacht Windquest is the first boat to finish the annual sailboat race from Port Huron to Mackinac Island.
The Max-Z86, owned by brothers Dick and Doug DeVos, crossed at 5:55:21 p.m. Sunday. At 27 hours, 35 minutes, 21 seconds, the 86-foot canting keeler out of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Michigan finished very fast in the annual 333-mile race from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Mich.
Windquest, the Max Z86 sailed by Dick and Doug DeVos out of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Holland, was the first in a field of 311 racing boats to finish the 103rd sailing of the Chicago-to-Mackinac race. Windquest completed the world’s longest annual freshwater race at 6:55 p.m. on Sunday. The 85.8-foot Windquest, which led the Turbo class out of Chicago Harbor at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, completed the 333 nautical-mile course in 27 hours, 35 minutes.
