Leaders of the One Kent Coalition, a group of business leaders that includes Peter Secchia, Dick and Betsy DeVos and David Frey, have urged the group to complete its work by Labor Day so enabling legislation can be introduced in Lansing this fall.

Boating enthusiasts have a new outlet at Kent County’s Millennium Park with the formal dedication Wednesday of the DeVos Family Boat House…Windquest Group President Dick DeVos was among the local dignitaries attending the dedication and recalled his family’s memories of boating since his father, Amway co-founder Richard DeVos, bought the family’s first boat when he was about 8 years old.
“I love all things aviation and I can appreciate the need for aircraft to do unique and special missions,” he said. The new SMAT location is officially known at the DeVos Aviation Campus. DeVos and his wife, Betsy, who recently began the West Michigan Aviation School, donated and raised money for the new building. Though they’re not currently connected, Dick DeVos wouldn’t rule out linking the two schools at some point in the future.
The School of Missionary Aviation Technology (SMAT), located at the Ionia County Airport, has a long history of training students in mission aviation. The benefit for students is that they not only learn how to fly, but also learn FAA-certified training on repairing their aircraft.
Sixty-nine freshman students from the very first class of the West Michigan Aviation Academy are in Washington, D.C.
